Las dos se estrenan al fin. Si algo tiene Ghibli es la capacidad innata para transmitir emociones en todas sus películas y continúa haciéndolo. En el caso de El cuento de la princesa Kaguya, ésta se basa en una tradición japonesa antiquísima que proviene de El cuento del cortador de Bambú y que tiene un encanto absolutamente especial. Un campesino, cortador de bambú, descubre en una raíz una flor en cuyo interior hay una especie de ser luminoso. El hombre lleva su hallazgo a casa, lo cuida junto a su mujer y poco a poco ese ser se transforma en una pequeña niña que va creciendo cada vez más rápidamente. La pequeña interactúa con los niños del campo y va siendo feliz pero el padre tiene decidido que ella será una princesa. Por ello, la enviarán a la capital para que actúe ante la corte y se comporte como tal, con el fin de que aprenda todo tipo de tradiciones "cultas" de la época. En la cinta están incluidas muchas referencias previamente conocidas en otras películas de Ghibli como el amor a la naturaleza, el cuidado especial a lo que rodea a la infancia, una bellísima banda sonora firmada por el maestro Joe Hisaishi, el cariño y respeto a los mayores, la infamia de los poderosos, el arraigo familiar, la pureza del amor... y miles de detalles más. Tenemos ante nosotros un baile de sensaciones y emociones puras. La magia que solo Ghibli en ocasiones es capaz de regalar. La princesa, a la que pronto adoramos, no es que sea princesa. The narrative slowly unravels like a novel as themes are explored through nuance and metaphor. The delicate dealing with love lost recalls Lee Chang-dong's Secret Sunshine and Céline Sciamma's Portrait de La Jeune Fille en Feu, regarding the myth of Orpheus and Eurydice. The cinematography, shot in a noticeably textured 35mm, is peculiar in the way it involves the setting and keeps us a certain physical distance from the characters. I think Michael Haneke would be proud of this film.
The central character Ingimunder's relationship with his granddaughter Salka serves the film in predictable but endearing ways. Strong child acting is often taken for granted, but Ída Mekkín Hlynsdóttir's performance is far from typical. It is also a testament to both fine direction (Hlynur Palmason) and strong casting because the two leads are almost irreplaceable and truly contribute to make the film something special.
A White, White Day is enriched by its simplicity and singularity as it takes on heavy themes. The characters are real, the story is thoughtfully restrained, and the ending is remarkable. One of the more memorable films of the year.

Thought it would be a bomb knowing nothing about the film judging by the trailer and poster, only interested in the mythology of Ne Zha. And damn, it was entertaining, fast paced full of slapstick humor and action, although the first few minutes had some slight cringe you might expect from a Chinese animation, but that quickly goes away.
The visuals and 3d were spectacular. I'd say on the level of Dreamworks, somewhat near Pixar at times, although there were moments especially the dragons that were pretty bad, and 1 or 2 scenes that made my eyes spasm a bit from weird 3d movement. I first thought the initial character designs were like some weird Naruto-esk spinoff with the child NeZha looking a bit ugly, plus tropey action scenes. But it's one of those cases where watching it is much better than the lower quality trailers I came across, and none of the action was corny with emo characters trying too hard to act cool.
The subtitles can pass by VERY fast and/or get lost against the background, so get ready to read fast. I'm left with some questions on the origin story which deviates a little from what I read, but there's enough to stay true to the mythos. There are even some moving, touching scenes with NeZha and his parents. Can't wait for the sequel which multiple end credits scenes point to.
